You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 16:11 ESV
Shout for joy to the Lord, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright.
Psalm 33:1 ESV
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Psalm 51:12 ESV
Do you know how many times the word joy is used in the Bible? If you don't know, don't feel bad, because I didn't know until I Googled it! The word joy is used 214 times, mostly in the psalms. That’s a lot, so it must be pretty important.
I know for me, it’s really easy to be full of joy when things are going good, but it gets hard to be joyful when life is not going how you planned. When your relationships are struggling, sickness is running you down, your teenagers are giving you attitude, or finances are stressing you out, it’s really hard to fake joy. The thing is, I don't believe God wants us to. I don't think it means you have to act like a jerk to everyone around you, but I think it’s ok to tell friends and family you need prayer and why you’re struggling. You definitely shouldn’t let your unhappiness define who you are and the relationships around you. Trust me, I’m calling myself out on this, too! You know the phrase, “If momma ain't happy, ain’t nobody happy”? Well, I’ve said that in my life, but do I really want to live by that? As a striving-to-be-godly woman, I want to bring joy to those around me, not take their joy away. So I promise to work on this issue in my life.
I hope if anyone’s struggling with finding joy right now, that you’ll be praying for God to change your heart and realize all the blessings in your life He’s given you. Love to you all, friends! Now go find your joy!
