I’ve always been into the way things look…from advertising to product design to home décor. I used to place an unnecessary value on “things,” but in recent years, God has really been working on my heart and actually changing my heart. I still like nice things, but they don’t seem quite as important as I once thought. I think this change of heart can happen naturally as we pursue Jesus. But most often, our culture’s constant parade of “stuff” needs to be actively combated with what Jesus thinks about it. He is always so much more concerned about our hearts, our very souls, than anything else.
Knowing my enthusiasm for home interiors, my sister gave me a book by someone whose design I appreciate. The book looked fascinating, and I couldn’t wait to look over it and read how this designer picked up different items from life experiences and personal travel. But the title of the book bothered me. “Things That Matter.” Do things really matter? I don’t think I realized how much my view of “stuff” had changed until I felt my heart reject that phrase. I want to focus my heart and mind on what Jesus Himself places value on, not on mere objects.
If someone wrote a book about the “Things That Matter” to you, what would it include?
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.
Luke 10:27, ESV
