Scripture: John 14:15-21
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
Explanation: In the passages we have looked at this week, Jesus has made multiple claims to be the only path to true, full, everlasting life. The idea is that if we put our trust in Jesus and follow after Him, we too can experience the life that Jesus offers. So often, we reduce this to a prayer we pray or a belief we hold. The prayer is good and the belief is necessary. But today, Jesus explains that really trusting Him takes skin in the game. It takes actually doing what He commands. It sounds simple enough, but anybody who has tried knows how difficult it is to die to yourself and allow someone else to dictate how you live your life. Jesus even has that covered. Along with the command comes the promise to send Someone to help along the way: the Holy Spirit. So God will be with us and help us as we try to find life…by surrendering our lives to Him.
- What is one thing that stands out to you in today’s passage?
- What is one thing you know God is asking you to surrender to Him?
- Why has it been so hard to surrender?
- Ask the Holy Spirit to give you strength and courage to follow Christ and do what He commands.
