Scripture: Genesis 1:26-27
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Explanation: From the very beginning, God put a special value on humanity. We were to be the crown of creation and the representative of God on earth. We were given the value and honor of bearing the image of God and reflecting Him to the creation. We were given the authority and purpose of managing and stewarding it well, the way that God would, so life and flourishing would take place on Earth. It was an amazing honor gifted to us, one that we gave away two chapters later (Genesis 3)…and one that with everything in us, we are constantly trying to get back. Every pursuit of our lives is an attempt to find the life and wholeness and greatness we were freely given by God. But we continue to make the same mistake Adam and Eve made. We try to restore it without first restoring what gave us value in the first place…our relationship with God. We were meant for greatness, honor, and glory, but it was only meant to be found when we relied on and reflected God.
