Lyric:Peace, bringing it all to peace, The storm surrounding me, Let it break at Your name

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

Paul is concluding his letter with a parting intercession for their spirit, soul and body. The soul and spirit are separate entities. Humans have souls where animals have instinct. In humans the soul embraces the intellect, the emotions and the will. We have the inner knowledge of right and wrong.

God gave humans something He gave no animal and that is a spirit. The spirit makes us God conscious. “The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord.” Proverbs 20:27

Those of us who have accepted Christ as our Savior have the Holy Spirit inhabiting our spirit. Our governing principle is not instinct but an intelligent, emotional, and volitional cooperation of soul and spirit with the indwelling Holy Spirit.

We are daily pushed on by culture, our flesh and the Devil. This is why Paul is adamant in praying for the God of peace to sanctify us wholly in our soul, spirit, and body until the return of the Lord. The emphasis is on the work God is going to do!

With God it is three for three.

Against Us...

1. Culture

2. Our flesh nature

3. Satan

For Us...

1. The Father

2. The Son

3. The Holy Spirit

That is power on our side!

Paul concludes these two verses with a parting proclamation...”Faithful is HE who has called you!”  When He called us (and we accepted His salvation) He knew all about us and took everything into account. Romans 8 says “Who He calls He justifies.”

He is faithful. He keeps His Word. You are His. You are His work. You are His child. You are His redeemed. He still knows everything about you. It doesn’t matter how many times you have been to rehab, how many times your tongue has said the wrong thing, how many missed opportunities for witnessing you caved on, how many injustices done to you, how many calories you over ate, how many destroyed relationships you have, how many emotional purchases you have made to slide into debt...nothing matters except surrender. When we surrender our spirit, soul, and body, He meets us at that point to continue His work of fulfilling His call in our lives.

He promises to sanctify (free us from sin) us completely.

1. Practice believing that!

Ask God to help you identify the lies you believe about Him and practice calling them out. Develop the habit of telling yourself the truth.

2. Memorize this small passage.

It will be a tool to use in understanding Gods power in your surrender.
