Lyric: Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear
Scripture: John 14:26-27
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Sometimes it’s just comforting having someone who’s in control of a situation around. When you’re a child, knowing mom and dad are around just settles things. It’s the presence of the one who can help us and keep us safe and be in control of a situation that allows us to find peace. Jesus was that presence for His disciples. When Jesus was near, they could trust that everything was going to be ok. But here in John, Jesus was telling them that He was leaving. I can imagine the disciples reaction and fear. What now? Jesus had a solution. Jesus instructs them that His presence would still be with them, all be it a little different. The Holy Spirit would come to them and be His presence in their lives, no matter where they went. No longer would Jesus be in one place at one time teaching them and helping them. Jesus would be with them everywhere and anywhere, always with them, helping them, comforting them, encouraging, convicting and guiding them. He promised His disciples that though He was leaving physically, His Spirit would always be with them and in that they should find peace.
- What does it say? (Read the passage a few times)
- How would I say that? (Restate or retell it in your own words.)
- What must I do to obey what I have learned? “I will...” (Craft a sentence of how you will obey God today, trusting the Spirit to empower you.)
- What did you learn about God?
- What did you learn about humanity?
