Title: The Baptism of Jesus
Author: Kenny Burcham
Why did Jesus get baptized? Why would someone who is sinless with nothing to repent of, need to repent? In Mark 1:9-13 (ESV), we read the account of Jesus's baptism.
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."
Why did Jesus get baptized? Because God said so. It was Jesus laying down the example of obedience to the Father, the example we should all follow in baptism. Jesus was sent to save us. He did this by taking our place on the cross and by showing us the steps we must take to follow Him.
I remember the day I was baptized. My dad baptized me at the church I grew up at. It was Easter Sunday and I made the decision to be baptized after service. I don’t remember what the pastor said. I don’t remember the songs we sang. One thing I won’t forget, though, was the feeling of knowing that I needed to be baptized. I was nervous but excited. I stood there and stumbled over the phrases I was asked to repeat, my thoughts racing as I was ready for it to be done. Then it finally happened. I remember the feeling of excitement and joy I felt after coming out of the water. It was such an exciting day. Absolutely one of the greatest decisions I ever made.
It is only by Jesus that we have hope and a future. It is only by His life that we know to follow His example and be baptized.
If you have not been baptized, what is holding you back?
