God has been teaching me some hard lessons on obedience. I have this bad habit of comparing myself to people in my life and making excuses for why I am falling short in certain areas. I tend to show myself way more grace than I show my kids or husband. God has really been challenging me in this, and let me tell you, it stings. For one, it is hard when God shows you the ugliness of your heart, and second, it is hard to change something you have been doing for so long. God keeps reminding me that I NEED to be obedient, even when I don’t want to; I need to love even when everything inside of me is screaming to do the opposite; I need to forgive, even when they don’t deserve it; I need to get out of my comfort zone to serve others.
Let me tell you, there is absolutely NO way I could even attempt to change this part of me without Jesus! This is still a work in progress for me, and I have to ask God for help every single day. Friends, we can’t rely on our emotions. We can’t let them dictate our actions. We have to be obedient, even when we are angry. We have to be obedient, even when we are hurt. We have to be obedient, even when we are insecure and afraid.
And this is love: that we will walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard
from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.
2 John 1:6
If you love me, keep my commands.
How do we obey, even when we don’t want to? Continually seek Jesus. I am praying that we will seek God more, and that He will do a BIG work in our hearts. My challenge to you is to take time every day this week to read His word and apply it to your lives. We can’t be obedient if we don’t know the commands.
