The Upside-Down Kingdom
Take 2-3 minutes to quiet yourself and ask God to speak to you today through your devotional time.
Reading: Matthew 20:20-28
Be sure to highlight or note anything that stands out to you while you read.
After reading the passage, take the next 5-10 minutes and spend time reflecting on what you read. You can write these things down in a journal or record them in your phone. Be attentive to both what you highlighted in the passage and what is going on in your life.
In God's kingdom, greatness looks nothing like the world's definition of success. When James and John's mother asked Jesus for positions of honor, she revealed what we all struggle with—the desire to be served rather than to serve. Jesus responds with a radical redefinition: true greatness is found in servanthood. This isn't about lowering our worth; it's about elevating our purpose. The Creator of the universe didn't come demanding service but offering it, ultimately giving His life as the ultimate act of service. Today, consider where you've been climbing the ladder of worldly success while missing the invitation to descend into true greatness. What would change if you measured your day not by what you accomplished for yourself, but by how you served others?
Now, take 10 minutes to seek God in prayer…

Now, take 10 minutes to seek God in prayer…
- Begin your time in prayer by taking 1-3 minutes to sit in silence (You can take longer if you sense the Spirit already beginning to speak to you).
- Pray through the things you sensed God speaking to you through the Scriptures or pray the following prayer: “Jesus, reshape my understanding of greatness. Forgive me for the times I’ve sought recognition over obedience. Give me a servant’s heart and open my eyes to the needs around me today.”
- Close by taking 5 minutes to sit in silence, asking God if there is anything else He wants to speak to you today.
Faith Steps:
- Intentionally serve one person today in a way that goes unnoticed—no announcement, no credit.
- At the end of the day, reflect: How did serving change my attitude compared to focusing on myself?
