When Faith Meets Logic: Why What We Believe Is Worth Thinking About
From the Branch Podcast Team
Welcome to the Branch Blog!
This week, we’re diving into a recent conversation from the Branch Podcast featuring Pastors Chris Reed, Matthew Johnson, and Anthony Trissel. Together, they explored a topic that’s both deep and practical: apologetics—a fancy word for the reasons we believe what we believe.
If you’ve ever had questions about your faith—or wanted to help someone else wrestle with theirs—this conversation is for you.
⸻
What Is Apologetics, and Why Does It Matter?
Apologetics isn’t about winning arguments. It’s about showing that Christianity is reasonable, historical, and reliable. For some, it provides a way into faith. For others, it deepens what they already believe.
As Pastor Anthony shared, “If Christianity is true—and we believe it is—then it should stand up to honest questions and deep thinking.”
We were never meant to follow Jesus with blind faith. He gave us hearts to trust and minds to think. Apologetics helps us do both.
⸻
You Don’t Have to Choose Between Logic and Faith
Logic is a beautiful starting point. It helps us understand things like the resurrection, the credibility of scripture, and the character of Jesus. But logic alone isn’t enough. Pastor Matthew reminded us, “Logic opens the door, but it’s faith that walks us into relationship with God.”
Even Jesus, when asked for signs and proof by the Pharisees, pointed to what had already been done—and then invited people to believe. Faith is always the final step.
⸻
There’s a Mountain of Evidence Behind Our Beliefs
During the podcast, Pastor Anthony walked through some powerful evidences for the truth of Christianity:
•The resurrection was proclaimed within years of Jesus’ death. This isn’t legend—it’s history.
•Eyewitnesses were willing to die for what they saw. The disciples had nothing to gain but everything to lose.
•The Gospel writers included uncomfortable and embarrassing details, like their own failures or women being the first to witness the resurrection—something that added no credibility in that culture, unless it was true.
•The early Church grew under persecution, not power. There was no incentive to lie.
And let’s not forget: the Bible was written by 40+ authors across 1,500 years in multiple languages, yet it tells one unified story of redemption. No other book in history comes close.
⸻
So Why Don’t More People Believe?
The problem isn’t a lack of evidence—it’s often the posture of the heart.
Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.” We are whole beings. That means truth must speak to both our heads and our hearts.
Some people reject faith not because it doesn’t make sense, but because they’re not open to it. Others are waiting for the logic to carry them all the way into belief—but eventually, we all have to make a faith decision.
⸻
Where Do You Begin?
If you’re a skeptic, or simply searching, we want to invite you to take a step—not into blind belief, but into honest curiosity. As Pastor Anthony said:
“Even just cracking the door open to the idea that Jesus might be who He said He was is often all God needs to begin working in your life.”
Try reading one of the Gospels. Ask questions. Pray—even if it feels strange. You may be surprised by how God shows up.
If you’re already a believer, let this encourage you: your faith is built on something real. Keep growing in your knowledge. Ask questions. Dive into the scriptures. God’s truth can handle it.
⸻
In the End, It’s About A Relationship.
All of this—the logic, the history, the evidence—points to one thing: Jesus wants a relationship with you.
He didn’t come to give us a rulebook. He came to restore us to God. He loves us enough to meet us in our doubts, just like He met Thomas and Peter and Paul.
So whether you’re confident in your faith or still figuring it out, remember: Jesus isn’t waiting for you to have all the answers. He’s waiting for your heart.
