The Freedom of Bringing Darkness to Light

Take 2-3 minutes to quiet yourself and ask God to speak to you today through your devotional time.  

Reading: 1 John 1:5-9

Be sure to highlight or note anything that stands out to you while you read.  
After reading the passage, take the next 5-10 minutes and spend time reflecting on what you read. You can write these things down in a journal or record them in your phone. Be attentive to both what you highlighted in the passage and what is going on in your life.

After Adam and Eve sinned, their first instinct was to hide from God. Your instinct is the same—to hide your struggles, addictions, and shame. But God calls out, not because He doesn’t know where you are, but because He wants you to come out of hiding. There is no healing in darkness, only in light.

The enemy thrives when you keep secrets, telling you that if people really knew you, they’d reject you. But 1 John 1:9 promises that when we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive and purify us. Vulnerability in safe community breaks the power of shame. What are you hiding? What darkness are you trying to manage alone? God is inviting you to courageous honesty—first with Him, then with trusted believers. Recovery, restoration, and freedom begin when you stop performing and start being real. Today, take one step out of hiding.

What area of my life have I been hiding that God is inviting me to bring into the light today?

Now, take 10 minutes to seek God in prayer…  

1. Begin your time in prayer by taking 1-3 minutes to sit in silence (You can take longer if you sense the Spirit already beginning to speak to you).  
2. Pray through the things you sensed God speaking to you through the Scriptures or pray the following prayer: Lord, You already know every part of my heart, yet You still love me completely. Give me the courage to bring my struggles into the light instead of hiding behind fear or shame. Thank You that Your grace is greater than my failures and that true freedom is found through honesty and confession. Amen.
   
3. Close by taking 5 minutes to sit in silence, asking God if there is anything else He wants to speak to you today.  

Faith Steps:

1. Confess an area of struggle to God with complete honesty today. 
2. If appropriate, share that struggle with a trusted Christian who can pray for you and walk alongside you.
