Are God's Commands Optional?

How We Respond to God’s Word

In this sermon, Pastor Matthew challenges believers to evaluate how they respond to the revelation of God, through Scripture, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. While many claim to honor God's Word, true obedience requires more than lip service. Drawing from Matthew 15, this message exposes the danger of replacing God's commands with man-made traditions and calls Christians to embrace the transforming power of scripture fully.

Exposing the Danger of Man-Made Traditions

The Rebuke of the Pharisees and Scribes

Jesus confronts religious leaders who elevated oral traditions above the commands of God. Though they claimed to revere scripture, their actions betrayed a heart distant from God. By prioritizing man-made rules, they invalidated God's Word and misled others.

Modern Parallels in Today’s Church Culture

Pastor Matthew draws connections to contemporary Christian culture, where personal preferences and cultural standards often override biblical truth. Whether through legalism or compromise, the temptation to adjust God’s Word to fit our desires remains a real threat.

The Five Purposes of God’s Word

1. Protection

Scripture guards our hearts and lives from spiritual harm. Like a shield or lamp, it warns us of dangers and helps us avoid costly missteps.

2. Direction

God’s Word provides clarity and guidance, pointing us toward His will and aligning our steps with His purpose. Trusting in God brings straight paths.

3. Introspection

The Bible acts as a mirror, revealing areas in need of change. Pastor Matthew encourages believers not just to read scripture, but to allow it to examine and shape their hearts.

4. Correction

More than a set of ideals, scripture is active and discerning, exposing wrong motives and behavior. God's correction is a gift meant to restore and strengthen us.

5. Consolation

True comfort comes from aligning with God’s promises. His Word brings peace and assurance, but only when we walk in obedience to it.

Rejecting a Filtered Faith

Misusing the Bible Diminishes Its Power

Selective reading or altering scripture to suit personal beliefs strips it of its intended power. Pastor Matthew illustrates this with analogies of broken protection, unclear direction, and distorted correction.

Embracing Wholehearted Obedience

To fully benefit from God’s Word, we must submit to it entirely. This sermon ends with a powerful call to repentance, urging listeners to surrender every area of life to God’s truth, regardless of the cost.

Obedience Is Not Optional

The Word of God is not a suggestion. It is life-giving truth meant to guide, protect, correct, and comfort. Pastor Matthew challenges each listener to stop filtering scripture through personal desires and instead let God’s Word filter and shape them. Obedience brings transformation and eternal reward.
