Acts 28:1-6 | Paul Ashore on Malta | TCBS

“Hospitality is really kind of love in action.” — Pastor Anthony

A Safe Arrival and an Unexpected Welcome

After weeks of violent wind, uncertainty, and eventual shipwreck, Acts 28 opens with a quiet but significant statement. Once they were safe on shore, they learned that they had landed on the island of Malta. The storm that threatened their lives had not succeeded. The ship had been lost, but every person survived, just as God had promised Paul.

What happens next is not dramatic at first. It is simple. The people of the island show unusual kindness. Luke tells us that it was cold and rainy, and the islanders built a fire to welcome the soaked and exhausted travelers.

Pastor Stacey paused here to reflect on the importance of hospitality. Before any miracle takes place, before the story turns again, we see ordinary people responding with compassion. They do not know these men. They are unaware that some are prisoners under Roman guard. Yet they recognize a need and act on it. The travelers are cold, so they build a fire. They are vulnerable, so they extend welcome.

Pastor Anthony described hospitality as helping people feel seen and anticipating their needs. In a world where many feel overlooked or unnoticed, that kind of intentional care communicates value. Pastor Chris added that hospitality in the ancient world was not optional. Welcoming the stranger was expected, and for Christians it became an expression of Christ’s heart. Jesus Himself said in Mark 10:45 that He came not to be served but to serve. When believers practice hospitality, they reflect that posture.

The discussion also moved beyond formal roles inside the church. Pastor Stacey challenged listeners to consider what hospitality looks like when they are not serving in an official capacity. It may involve opening a home, sitting with someone who is alone, or choosing small acts of kindness in everyday life. Biblical hospitality is not limited to a greeting at the door. It is a lifestyle of seeing others and responding with care.

A Sudden Trial on Solid Ground

Just as the moment begins to feel settled, the story shifts again. As Paul gathers sticks to help keep the fire burning, a poisonous snake, driven out by the heat, fastens onto his hand. The calm of the shoreline is interrupted by danger.

The reaction of the islanders is immediate. They assume this must be justice. Though Paul escaped the sea, they conclude that he must be a murderer whom fate will not allow to live. Their reasoning reflects a common belief that suffering is always a direct result of guilt.

They watch closely, expecting him to swell up or drop dead.

Instead, Paul shakes the snake off into the fire and remains unharmed.

After waiting a long time and seeing no effect, the people reverse their conclusion. Now they declare that he must be a god. In a matter of moments, Paul moves from condemned criminal to divine figure in their eyes.

Pastor Chris noted that this moment reinforces what God had already promised. No one would lose their life in the storm. That promise extends beyond the sea and onto the shore. God vindicates both Paul and His own word. The snake does not have the final say.

Trust Formed Through Years of Walking with God

One of the most striking elements of this passage is Paul’s response. There is no record of panic. There is no frantic search for help. He simply shakes the snake into the fire.

Pastor Anthony observed that this kind of calm does not develop overnight. By this point in his life, Paul had endured imprisonment, beatings, rejection, and repeated hardship. He had seen God provide and protect him in ways that strengthened his confidence. His steady reaction reflects a deep history with God.

This does not mean Paul was emotionless or incapable of fear. Scripture shows other moments in his life when he expressed weakness and discouragement. Rather, this moment reveals what long obedience can produce. The promise God had given him carried more weight than the threat hanging from his hand.

Believers are not called to deny anxiety or pretend that trials are easy. Pastor Anthony was clear that fear and doubt are part of the human experience. The difference lies in where those emotions are directed. Instead of turning away from God, faith brings fear to Him. Over time, that practice shapes a steadier heart.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is growth in trust.

The Power of God on Display

There is no attempt in the text to explain away what happened. The snake was poisonous. The expectation of death was reasonable. Paul’s survival is presented as an act of God’s power.

Pastor Stacey emphasized that the credit belongs entirely to the Lord. Paul’s strength, discipline, or personality did not preserve him. God did. The miracle served as a reminder that the same God who carried them through the storm was still at work on the shore.

Pastor Chris also addressed an important distinction. Paul did not seek danger or attempt to prove anything. He was not testing God. The bite occurred while he was serving and helping. The miracle was not a command for believers to pursue risk. It was a demonstration of God’s protection in the course of obedience.

In that sense, the story encourages confidence without promoting recklessness. God is powerful. He is able to intervene in ways beyond human explanation. At the same time, faith does not require believers to manufacture dramatic moments.

A Witness to a Watching World

The islanders’ quick shift from accusation to worship reveals something important. They recognized that something unusual had occurred. Though their interpretation was misguided, they could not ignore what they saw.

Pastor Anthony prayed that believers today would live with a similar steadiness, not for their own recognition, but so that others might see the faithfulness of God. When followers of Christ walk through difficulty with peace, it raises questions. That peace becomes a testimony.

Acts 28:1–6 weaves together compassion and power. The fire on the shore shows human kindness. The shaken snake reveals divine protection. Together, they form a picture of life with God. We are called to care for others in practical ways, and we are invited to trust Him in circumstances beyond our control.

Paul’s journey is not finished, but this moment on Malta reinforces a truth already seen throughout Acts. God’s purposes are not easily interrupted. Storms do not cancel His promises. Neither do snakes.

For believers today, the passage offers steady encouragement. When the ground feels uncertain and trials arise unexpectedly, God remains faithful. He is present in ordinary kindness and in extraordinary power. As we grow in our walk with Him, we learn to trust that His word stands firm, even when circumstances attempt to say otherwise.
