The Lens You Look Through

Take 2-3 minutes to quiet yourself and ask God to speak to you today through your devotional time.

Reading: Romans 12:2

Be sure to highlight or note anything that stands out to you while you read.
After reading the passage, take the next 5-10 minutes and spend time reflecting on what you read. You can write these things down in a journal or record them in your phone. Be attentive to both what you highlighted in the passage and what is going on in your life.

Every person sees the world through a lens shaped by upbringing, experience, relationships, and culture. None of us arrived at our beliefs in a vacuum. The danger is not that we have a worldview—everyone does. The danger is when we never examine it.

Paul’s call to be transformed by the renewing of the mind is a call to submit our lens to God’s Word. When Scripture becomes the primary filter through which we interpret life, we stop being shaped by whatever is loudest in our culture and start being shaped by what is eternally true. Your lens determines what you see.

What has shaped your worldview more—the voices of culture or the truth of Scripture?

Now, take 10 minutes to seek God in prayer…
  1. Begin your time in prayer by taking 1-3 minutes to sit in silence (You can take longer if you sense the Spirit already beginning to speak to you).
  2. Pray through the things you sensed God speaking to you through the Scriptures or pray the following prayer: Lord, renew my mind through Your Word. Reveal the ways my thinking has been shaped by culture instead of by You. Give me the humility to lay down my assumptions and allow Your truth to reshape the way I see every area of life. Help me love what You love and value what You value. Amen.
  3. Close by taking 5 minutes to sit in silence, asking God if there is anything else He wants to speak to you today.

Faith Steps:
  1. Choose one topic that strongly influences your thinking and spend time reading what Scripture says about it.
  2. Ask God to reveal one belief or assumption that needs to be brought under His authority.
