The Steadfast Love of God
For his steadfast love endures forever. - Psalm 107:1
A Devotional Message in an Unexpected Moment
On a snowed-out Sunday, Tree Church gathered in a different way. While the weather kept people from meeting in person, it created space for reflection. In that setting, Pastor Matthew Johnson shared a devotional message centered on one repeated truth found throughout Scripture. God’s steadfast love endures forever.
This message was not designed to replace gathered worship. It was meant to anchor hearts in a clear and steady biblical truth. Even when routines are disrupted and circumstances feel uncertain, God’s love remains constant. Scripture returns to this truth again and again because God’s people often need to be reminded of it.

The Meaning of Steadfast Love
Psalm 107 opens with a simple call. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. The reason for that gratitude is not tied to circumstances or outcomes. It is rooted in who God is. His steadfast love endures forever.
Steadfast love is not casual affection. It is devoted love. It is love that does not walk away when things become difficult. Scripture contrasts this kind of love with what people often experience in the world. Human love can be conditional and temporary. God’s love is not.
To say that God’s love endures forever is to say that it perseveres. It remains present through failure, hardship, confusion, and discipline. God’s love does not disappear when His people struggle. It continues with purpose.

The Tension Between Love and Difficulty
A question naturally follows this truth. If God’s love is steadfast, why do difficult seasons happen at all. Many believers wrestle with this tension. God has the power to change circumstances. God cares for His people. Yet hardship still comes.
Scripture does not ignore this question. Hebrews 12 speaks directly to it. The passage reminds believers that hardship is not evidence of God’s absence. Instead, it is often evidence of His involvement.
The writer of Hebrews points to those who came before. Faithful men and women endured suffering, uncertainty, and loss while trusting God. Their lives serve as examples. They ran the race set before them with endurance, laying aside sin and anything else that hindered their faith.

Discipline as Correction and Preparation
Hebrews 12 introduces an important framework. Difficulty in the life of a believer is described as discipline. Discipline is not limited to punishment. Scripture presents two clear expressions of it.
The first is discipline as consequence. When God’s people walk in disobedience, there are real outcomes. Sin disrupts relationship. It interferes with calling. God’s correction is meant to confront what is harmful and redirect the heart back toward obedience.
The second expression is discipline as preparation. At times, hardship is not tied to a specific failure. Instead, it is part of God’s process of shaping and training His people for what lies ahead. Just as an athlete or soldier is prepared through difficulty, God uses seasons of challenge to strengthen faith and build endurance.
Hebrews summarizes this truth plainly. Believers are called to endure hardship as discipline. God disciplines those He loves, not to harm them, but to form them.

Solomon’s Prayer and God’s Response
This understanding is reinforced in 2 Chronicles 6 and 7. Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the temple reveals both humility and awareness. He recognizes that God cannot be contained by a building. Yet he asks God to receive the offering of the temple as a place where His presence would dwell.
Solomon also looks ahead. He acknowledges that God’s people will fail. They will sin. They will face defeat, drought, famine, and trouble. Again and again, Solomon asks the same question. If your people repent and pray, will you hear them.
God’s response is clear. He accepts the temple. His presence fills it. Later, God appears to Solomon and confirms that He has heard his prayer. He also prepares Solomon for what will come.
God tells him there will be seasons of discipline. There will be moments when hardship touches the land. These moments are not random. They are meant to lead God’s people back to Him.

A Clear Pathway Through Hardship
In 2 Chronicles 7, God gives a familiar and direct promise. When His people face difficulty, He outlines how they are to respond. This response begins with humility.
Humility acknowledges need. It recognizes dependence on God rather than self. From humility flows prayer. God invites His people to come to Him instead of trying to solve everything on their own.
Prayer is followed by seeking God’s face. This is not simply asking for relief. It is asking for direction. God may reveal areas that need correction. He may also reveal that He is preparing someone for future purpose.
When sin is present, repentance is required. Repentance is not guilt alone. It is a change of direction. Obedience is the evidence that repentance has taken place.
God’s promise follows this response. He hears from heaven. He forgives sin. He brings healing. Blessing flows from obedience, not avoidance of hardship.

The Pattern of Psalm 107
Psalm 107 illustrates this rhythm repeatedly. Different groups of people face different kinds of trouble. Some wander without direction. Some suffer because of rebellion. Some experience distress that is not clearly linked to sin.
In every case, the response is the same. They cry out to the Lord in their trouble. God delivers them from their distress. Over and over, the psalm returns to gratitude for God’s steadfast love.
The message is not that hardship disappears quickly. The message is that God responds faithfully when His people turn to Him. Discipline serves a purpose. God’s love remains the foundation beneath it.
The psalm ends with a challenge. The wise person will reflect on these things. Wisdom is found in recognizing God’s pattern and responding rightly.

Responding to God’s Discipline Today
This message invites honest reflection. When difficulty comes, it is easy to dismiss it as bad luck or unfair circumstances. Scripture offers a different perspective. God is always working with intention.
For some, hardship reveals areas of disobedience that need to change. For others, it reveals a season of preparation that should not be wasted. In both cases, the response remains the same. Humble yourself. Pray. Seek God’s face. Walk in obedience.
God’s discipline does not last without purpose. It remains until that purpose is complete. God’s desire is not to withhold blessing, but to lead His people into it.

Living in the Confidence of Steadfast Love
The steadfast love of God is not threatened by discipline. It is the reason discipline exists at all. God corrects and prepares His people because He is devoted to them.
This truth calls for trust. God has not given up. He is not absent. He is present, purposeful, and committed to shaping lives that reflect His goodness.
As Psalm 107 declares, let the redeemed of the Lord say so. His steadfast love endures forever.
