A New Command
John 13:34-35 (NIV)
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Reflection
“Love like Me” is the command Jesus gave to His disciples. They followed Him for three and a half years and witnessed the way He loved others. And because of this radical love, the people Jesus interacted with were changed forever.
Zacchaeus, a tax collector hated by many, was waiting in a tree to see Jesus. When Jesus saw him, He told him they were going to his house to eat, despite what others thought about him. Zacchaeus repented of his sins and fixed his wrongs after being loved by Jesus.
Nicodemus, a Pharisee who heard about Jesus, came to meet with Him in the middle of the night to ask Him questions about who He was. Jesus loved Nicodemus, telling him of a better way to live and how to be “born again” as a believer.
A woman from Samaria came to the well to get some water and Jesus reveled to her who He was and that He knew everything about her. He did it in such a loving way that she went and told everyone about Him and many people believed in Him that day.
Jesus showed love to many others by healing the sick, listening to their needs, and ultimately dying on the cross for their sins.
Jesus loves everyone. In order to love like Jesus, we need to see others the way Jesus does. When you go into the store and see the cashier that always stresses you out, ask Jesus to give you wisdom for how to be kind. When you go out to eat and the service isn’t the best, you still tip despite how you were treated, loving them like Jesus would. When everyone is complaining at your kid’s sporting event, but you chose not to yell at the coaches or refs, you love like Jesus.
Loving like Jesus is opposite of the way we want to act in this world. But if we are going to be disciples for Him, we must learn to love like Him.
Action Step
Write down the place you need to go to today and ask God to show you how to love the people there by being different than the world. Write down the people you need to pray for at work and ask God to give you a different perspective for them.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me despite my faults. Help me to see and love people the way You do, choosing to be kind and encouraging to them just like Your Son’s example. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
