The Sword of Truth

Take 2-3 minutes to quiet yourself and ask God to speak to you today through your devotional time.

Reading: Matthew 10:34-39

Be sure to highlight or note anything that stands out to you while you read.
After reading the passage, take the next 5-10 minutes and spend time reflecting on what you read. You can write these things down in a journal or record them in your phone. Be attentive to both what you highlighted in the passage and what is going on in your life.

Jesus’ words about bringing a sword rather than peace can be jarring. Yet this passage reveals a crucial truth: following Jesus often requires us to make difficult choices that may create conflict, even within our closest relationships. The sword Jesus speaks of is the sword of truth, which can divide but also set free. Today, examine your loyalties. Are there areas where your commitment to Christ is compromised by other relationships or worldly concerns?

Are there any areas where your commitment to Christ is divided? How can you surrender them fully to Him?

Now, take 10 minutes to seek God in prayer…
  1. Begin your time in prayer by taking 1-3 minutes to sit in silence (You can take longer if you sense the Spirit already beginning to speak to you).
  2. Pray for the strength to put Jesus first, trusting that in losing your life for His sake, you will truly find it.
  3. Pray through the things you sensed God speaking to you through the Scriptures or pray the following prayer: Father, I surrender my fears to You. Help me trust in Your presence even when I feel vulnerable. Remind me of my worth in Your eyes and give me the courage to walk in faith today. Amen.
  4. Close by taking 5 minutes to sit in silence, asking God if there is anything else He wants to speak to you today.

Take Action:
  1. Identify one worldly attachment that might be competing with your devotion to Christ, and take a step to surrender it today.
  2. Speak truth in love to someone who needs to hear it, even if it is difficult.
