Why Should Christians Be Content?

Hebrews 13:5-6 (ESV)

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Reflection

Did you know the marketing industry spent approximately 481 billion dollars in 2022? The data shows an upward trend for future growth. There’s close to 14,000 marketing agencies employing nearly 200,000 people. There are 1184 bachelor programs offering a marketing degree in the United States. In addition, 52,916 individuals graduated with a marketing degree in 2021. Based on the statistics, it is safe to draw the conclusion that there is a massive and growing force to sell goods and services under the presumption to make our life better.

No wonder why we all struggle with contentment at certain points throughout our lives.

While culture is constantly and consistently attempting to sow discontent into our hearts, it is crucial for us, as followers of Jesus Christ, to remember to be content and the reason as to why.

I must admit, the concept of contentment and I have a long waging history. Several years ago, I found myself in a period of pure discontent. You see, I wholeheartedly desired a bigger home, and not just a bigger home, but a picture-perfect worthy home. My desire led to comparison, entitlement, and frustration. I fully believed my life wasn’t complete without a bigger and nicer home. My discontent spilled out onto my family, introducing a sense of insecurity, selfishness, and pride. In a moment of self-pity, God met me and spoke to me, “Amy, be grateful for what you have.” The truth hit me, and the ugly side of my human heart was exposed. I knew my mind and heart were not fixed on Jesus; instead, they were fixed on things of this world.

The things of this world are fleeting and temporary.

God is abiding, never leaving, and forever.

God sent His only Son, Jesus, to take our sins and die on our behalf so we could have a right relationship with Him. God then sent the Holy Spirit, our Helper in every situation, to dwell in us forever. What acts of incomprehensible love. If we aren’t content with these generous gifts, how can our hearts find fulfillment in anything lesser?

God is our true source of everlasting fulfillment.

Action Steps

  1. Read Colossians 3:2 and 1 Timothy 6:6-8.
  2.  Is your mind set on things above rather than things on earth? Which resource(s) are you holding onto so tightly?
  3. Spend time in prayer realigning your heart to focus on what matters most to God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to die for me. Thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in me. Lord, when I face discontent, help me focus my mind and heart on You. Help me to remember my source of fulfillment comes from You and only You. In Your loving Name, amen.
