Trusting God
1 Peter 5:5-7 (NLT)
In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
Reflection
In this scripture, the Apostle Peter advises us to "clothe yourselves with humility.” This is not always a simple thing to do. There have been times in my life when I have to be reminded to step into humility and put my pride aside. This scripture stresses to us the importance of humility in our relationships with one another and with God. Illustrating that humility is not just an inner disposition; it’s also an outward expression. Peter's message reminds me of the lessons that I have not only learned from my own mistakes, but also what we can learn from the lives of David and King Saul.
David, chosen by God to be the future king of Israel, displayed remarkable humility throughout his life. When he faced the giant Goliath, he didn't boast in his own strength but trusted in God's power. When King Saul pursued him with jealousy and hatred, David had the opportunity to kill Saul, but chose instead to spare his life, showing respect for the anointed king.
On the other hand, King Saul serves as a cautionary tale of pride's destructive power. Initially, he was humble and obedient, but as he tasted power and success, pride began to take root. He became jealous of David and disobeyed God's commands. Saul's pride led to his downfall, and he died in battle.
First Peter 5:5-7 emphasizes that "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble." We see this truth clearly in the lives of David and Saul. We also see this truth in our own lives as we trust and honor God while honoring others with humble hearts. God wants us to be confident in the gifts He has graciously given us, but to always acknowledge that everything is done better when He is in it with us.
Action Steps
Take a moment to evaluate where your heart is. Are you putting your trust in God, allowing Him to carry you through your life, or are you relying on yourself to carry the burden? Be intentional to lean on God to provide for you and use you .
Prayer
God, thank You for being someone who I can constantly trust and rely on. Thank You for calling me to things and not just leaving me there, but walking with me and equipping me with the things I need. Please remind me that I was not meant to walk through life alone, but I am meant to walk hand-in-hand with You. Help me to have a humble heart and open ears to hear Your voice. It is in Your name that I pray, amen.
