I Am Making All Things New!
Revelation 21: 1-5 (ESV)
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Reflection
Many passages in the Bible lend themselves to analogies . . . but not this one. We live in a world that upgrades things left and right, but any upgrade in this life pales in comparison to the glory that awaits us in eternity. This truth is more than otherworldly, it’s unfathomable! Our hearts should swell with anticipation for our heavenly home!
The older I get the more precious I find God’s promise to eradicate the past. In my youth, the road ahead was endless, and the burdens of life were weightless. Now, these bones get tired, but one day I’ll have a new body in the blink of an eye. My heart aches from the illness and death in my circle, but I am encouraged because our tears are only temporary. I grow weary from the tragedies that sin has wrought on mankind, but I am hopeful because one day God will instantly balance the scales.
The Bible has much to say about where we should focus our time and thoughts. We are in this world to minister to the unsaved and the downtrodden, but we are not of this world because this world is not our home. We keep our balance on that tightrope between purpose and pain only by setting our minds on the things above (Colossians 3:2).
Action Steps
Take a few minutes to reflect on the eternal perspective revealed in this passage. How can the truth of spending eternity in heaven bring you peace during life’s storms?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for preparing a heavenly paradise for us to enjoy when You call us home. Keep giving me opportunities to share the message of salvation so that others will experience Your loving-kindness forever. Amen.
