Through All Generations
Psalm 145:1-13 (ESV)
I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and his greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.
All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your saints shall bless you!
They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
and tell of your power,
to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
[The Lord is faithful in all his words
and kind in all his works.]
Reflection
In this song, David praises the goodness and mightiness of God. Consider all that God did for David: He chose him to become king, delivered him from Goliath, protected him from Saul, established a covenant with him, forgave him for his iniquities, and was with him always. David personally experienced the goodness of God and was committed to upholding God’s law.
Reflect on the multitude of God’s acts throughout scripture: Creation, Noah’s ark, freeing Israel, several instances of Him restoring and delivering people, birth of Jesus, Jesus’ miracles…the list goes on. Now reflect on the blessings of God you’ve experienced in your own life. Personally, He’s been with me and protected me throughout my entire life. He comforted me through childhood as I experienced volatile family situations, surrounded me with Christian friends in high school when I was most susceptible to becoming lost, guided me through mental health struggles, and has blessed me beyond belief in education, my career, my family, and finding a church home. God is so good in our daily lives. We should recognize and praise Him for all He does for us, as well as all the incredible things He’s done for the generations before us.
Scripture describes David as “a man after [God’s] heart” (Acts 13:22). We, too, should strive to be after God’s heart: praising Him, committing ourselves to doing His will, and continuing to share His glory with our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and beyond. May we show all generations the power He has shown from the beginning of time until our current daily lives, and provide joy and wonder for the kingdom to come.
Action Steps
Reflect on God’s greatness in your life, and praise Him for all He has done for you and the generations before you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for extending grace and loving me through generations of brokenness. You have been steadfast in Your faithfulness, and are worthy of all my praise and more. I pray that I routinely give You the glory You deserve. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
