Future Blessings
Genesis 12:1-4 (NIV)
The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.
“I will make you into a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”
So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.
Reflection
The Lord commanded Abram to leave his house, his family, and his country. Abram must leave behind a great deal to attain God’s promises, which at first, seem very vague. It is the promise of a place, with an inexact destination, that He will show Abram in the future. This doesn’t seem like the best business deal. Abram didn’t know anything about the upcoming journey. There were no travel guides, no opportunities to scout the location, no internet to check reviews. There weren’t many resources for Abram, and there was no back up plan. It would be an arduous and treacherous journey, but God wasn’t simply blessing a chosen family: He made a promise to Abram’s descendants and all the people of the earth through Abram.
Abram did just what God told him to do. God spoke to him, and he did something with it. What was the last thing you heard God say to you? Hearing from God, absorbing it into your entire being, and through faith, allowing ourselves to be challenged by the Holy Spirit, will have a profound impact on our lives. Just imagine what this world would look like if everyone followed God with the faith of Abram!
When a pebble disturbs still water, it creates a ripple, which leads to other ripples, disrupting the entire body of water. It’s a major consequence of a minor action. Your life matters! God blesses others through us. God wants to work in your life to be able to connect with, and bless, others. God spoke to Abram then, and He speaks to us now. We may never see the full impact of our actions, but our obedience to Him will be reflected in generations to come. God sews forgiveness and love into the fabric of our lives, so we may connect with others in Him. When we encourage others and share Jesus with them, we influence the future. Let’s make sure we obey God so our ripples point others to Him.
Action Steps
1. Read 2 John 1:6. How does this verse relate to today’s reflection?
2. Contemplate some things you know you have heard God tell you, but have yet to act on. Journal your barriers and fears and take some tiny steps of faith. Even small ripples have great impact!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray You use me to positively affect future generations. Give me strength to listen to and obey You, even when I’m feeling confused or defeated. Guide me in Your word and help me have an eternal mindset so that my behaviors demonstrate my love for You. Thank You for Your gifts, Your blessings, and Your provision in all things. In Jesus’ name, amen.
