Embrace My Role
1 Corinthians 12:15-21 (NIV)
Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”
Reflection
Austrian composer Wolfgang Mozart created a string of operas, concertos, symphonies, and sonatas that profoundly impacted classical music.
Pablo Picasso was an innovative artist, master painter, sculptor, and writer who shaped the world of modern art.
Maya Angelou was a world-famous author, poet, dancer, actress, singer, activist, and scholar who deeply influenced the arts.
One note on a piano, one brushstroke on a canvas, or one phrase on a page doesn’t necessarily inspire. However, when musical instruments are blended, colors of the spectrum are merged, and words are combined, the parts and patterns work together to sustain their beauty. This is true of the church body as well. We each have a role, and God has given us a divine purpose. The key is listening to Him and what He is calling you to do.
God chose you for this particular place and this particular sliver of time. He wants to use you for His purposes. You are not simply a pile of gathered bricks. You are being specifically assembled by God for a greater purpose! You are a significant part of the body of Christ, to be used as an extension of Him. He has given you gifts, great gifts you may have not even discovered yet. He has carefully placed all parts of the body right where He wants them. If one part hurts, the whole body suffers. On the other hand, if one flourishes, so does the body. No matter how significant you are, it’s only because of all that you are a part of. No part is important on its own.
God is preparing His house. Where has He placed you? Listen to Him and discover what you are to become.
Action Steps
Heavenly Father, I pray You reveal my strengths and gifts. Show me opportunities to advance Your kingdom as part of the body of Christ. When I’m questioning my role, remind me to listen for Your calling, so that I may be assembled to Your will. Help me discover what I am to become. Thank You for Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
