Abide in His Love
Discipleship is a life devoted to imitating Jesus by our surrender and obedience to Him. In this process, we come to understand His character as we establish a deeper relational connection with Him. Today we explore what it looks like to love others the way Jesus loves us.
Holy Spirit, I invite You to guide me in loving others the way Jesus loves me. As I seek You, help me see Your character so I can abide in it. May the fullness of Your Spirit fill me with wisdom to see others through Your eyes and to respond with compassion. Open my heart in revealing what You desire to teach me today. Amen.
John 15: 9-11 (NLT)
9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!”
As disciples of Jesus, we enter by faith into the revelation of God, His commandments, knowledge, and truth. It is this privilege that provides unwavering guidance, ensuring our paths remain steadfast and true. Foremost, we enter into His plans to love all people. Jesus emphasized this great commandment by seeking Him with all our heart, soul, and mind and by loving our neighbor.
As we abide in His love and connect relationally with others, occasionally our perspective becomes slightly askew. At times, we become fixated on presenting the details of His truth over prioritizing His great command to love our neighbor. Take a moment to think through a situation when you were focused on being right over showing love. How does this situation make you feel as you reflect?
Now let’s look at how Jesus loves us so that we can model His love to others. Jesus’ love greets us as an invitation to His table. Throughout the gospels, this invitation never had assumptions of a certain way of thinking, or a shared set of beliefs. His message was inclusivity, welcoming all people to partake in the kingdom of God, regardless of their social status, beliefs, or backgrounds. At the table, we experience the attributes of His love – mercy, compassion, forgiveness, humility, self-sacrifice, and wholeness. How could the table you set for your neighbor better display these attributes?
We get to be God’s vessels by inviting others into relationships, paying attention to their needs, understanding their hurts, and responding to them with compassion. In doing so, we bear witness to God’s character, His love, and His grace that will always meet us where we are.
After taking some time to reflect on these questions, seek God in honest prayer. Ask Him to reveal His ways to best love others. Are there certain people you feel God is calling you towards relationship with?
God, show me more deeply Your character of love.
God, help guide me to love others this way.
May God encourage you to love others so His light can shine to all those around you!
