Girded with Truth
This week, we are exploring what it truly means to die to ourselves and live a life immersed in God’s truth. Take a moment to reflect and begin with a simple prayer.
Heavenly Father, thank You for all that You have done for me. I thank You for the inexplicable sense of peace You have given me. Help me don the armor of Your truth and model the radical life of Jesus. Guide me as I gird myself in Your word so I can clearly discern lies and deception in my life. I continue to pray for self-control and discipline to stop certain behaviors and focus on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Ephesians 6:14a (NLT)
14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth…
In today’s reading, Paul instructs us to put on the belt of truth, and we do this by knowing and holding fast to what God’s word (the Bible) says. On a scale of 1-10, how familiar are you with the truth of God’s word?
Knowing God’s word is essential to becoming a true disciple of Christ because it keeps us tethered to what is true. The Bible tells us that we have an enemy (satan) who seeks to devour us (1 Peter 5:8), and one of the chief ways he seeks to devour us is by deceiving us. In fact, deception is one of satan’s most effective tactics. By manipulating God’s word or flat out lying to us, satan plays on our emotions, thoughts, and desires. We must know God’s truth so that we can recognize and see through satan’s lies and deceit. If we don’t, we will easily become ensnared, walk in falsehood, and face defeat.
One of the biggest lies satan tries to get us to believe is that we’re helpless and stuck. Do you feel helpless and stuck today? Take some time right now and look up what God’s word says about that. (Try a google search with the words “what does the Bible say about being helpless and stuck” and see what pops up!)
The enemy loves to send people into great confusion. The only truth (and “weapon” – Eph. 6:17) we have is God’s word. This is why Paul calls believers to stand in the strength they have in the truth of the gospel. We must know what the Bible says, we must align our thoughts/feelings/desires to what the Bible says, and we must live out what the Bible says. This is the only way to truly follow Christ and experience His fullness of life.
Today’s devotion is challenging and may be shining a light on some areas of your life that need adjusting. We encourage you to ask God’s guidance in these areas through prayer. Here are some ways to get started:
God, I want to learn more about Your truth. Help me…
God, please reveal any lies I’ve been believing and teach me how to see the world through Your lens of truth.
God promises to always be with us, so rest in that truth today.
