Peace Like a River
We are continuing with our series Following Jesus. This week, we focus more on the truth that Jesus presented during his time on earth, and how this impacts us as Christians. Let’s begin with a prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the truth You shared with us through Jesus. I pray that I hear and recognize those truths, abide by them, and experience the fullness of life only You can provide. Amen.
Isaiah 48:17-18 (NLT)
17 This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
who teaches you what is good for you
and leads you along the paths you should follow.
18 Oh, that you had listened to my commands!
Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river
and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.
Imagine: peace flowing like a gentle river. Think of a time when you felt an overwhelming sense of peace. What were the circumstances? How long until that peace subsided? It’s safe to say that most of us experience minimal peace on a daily basis, because we’re inundated with decisions we need to make. If it’s not something in this moment, it’s something minutes, hours, days, even weeks later that plague our minds. We wrack our brains about what our decisions should be, and the dozens of outcomes each different decision could have. What if, instead of constant anxieties and struggle for control, we experienced the peace God offers us?
This passage is reflecting on God’s guidance. He shows us which path to take, the one that will allow us to experience peace flowing like a gentle river. We need only to seek Him and listen to Him. How often do seek God's guidance, and obey what He tells you? Do you notice a difference in outcomes (emotional, physical, spiritual) when you seek God and listen to Him, versus when you make decisions on your own?
One of the blessings of obedience is the peace of God that fills our soul. When we live life His way, we can trust that He is in control of everything. Seek God. Trust that He will provide for you and guide you. Allow Him the opportunity to show you flowing peace. Take a few moments to spend time in prayer with Him. Feel free to use the following prompt to help you get started.
