With All Your Heart
This week, we are learning about the posture that Jesus modeled for us when we pray. Yesterday, we focused on humility, which is a really important place to start today. When we focus on who all God is, then we better see ourselves for who we really are in the light of His infinite goodness. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to increase in us so that we can decrease.
Holy Spirit, come rest on us today. We so desperately want more of You and less of our selfishness. We want to experience Your touch so that You are the only One who will ever satisfy us. Amen.
Deuteronomy 4:29 (NLT)
29 But from there you will search again for the Lord your God. And if you search for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him.
When I was in high school, my grandma gave me a gold ring that her grandma brought with her when they emigrated from England. I love history and our family’s ancestry, so it remains one of my favorite gifts I have ever received. After several months of wearing it, the ring just disappeared off my finger one day. I have no idea when it fell off, so I could not even retrace my steps. I searched desperately all over our house and I’m sure any other place I could think of to find the precious family heirloom. Have you ever searched for something you lost of great value to you?
Unfortunately, I never found the ring. I still get a little sick to my stomach today when I think about how I lost this amazing gift. When I lose important things now, there’s always a fear I will never find it again like my great-great grandmother’s ring. If I’m being honest with myself, this is often how I approach God. I don’t mean that I lose God, but that I come to Him half-hearted, fearing that He won't satisfy me. Are there any fears holding you back in your search for God?
Today’s verse is God’s promise to us that if we search for Him with all our hearts, we will find Him. What does it look like to search for God with all our hearts? I think it starts with a heart that is undivided by our fear of being let down or embarrassing ourselves. It is believing to our core that He is the only thing that will ever satisfy our deepest longings and desires. This conviction will give us eyes to see that He is worth finding in the marriage that ended, the child you lost, the disease ravaging your body, the financial strain, the unrequited love, the daily grind. Do you truly believe He is everything you’re searching for?
Unlike that lost ring, we have the promise of finding God every time we search for Him. Even when we mess up, we can search for Him again. Even when we think we have experienced God’s best, there is always more of Him to be found. How incredible that we will never reach the end of our Father and that He always wants to be found by us! Can you imagine how different life would be if your only desire was to know God more?
Read Deuteronomy 4:29 three times out loud to claim this promise for you today.
Lord, help me believe this promise with all my heart. Help me believe in my bones that You are all I ever need.
May we never be satisfied by anything except Almighty God.
