Hungering for God
Today, we are going to talk about hungering for God. Not just going to Him from time to time, but really desiring and longing for that communion with Him. Before we look at our Scripture, let’s invite Him into this space.
God, thank You for today. Thank You for the space and time to spend with You. Speak to me now what You want me to hear. Fill me with Your presence, Your peace, and Your wisdom. In Your name I pray, amen.
Matthew 7:7-8 (NLT)
7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
The special thing about this translation of this passage, is the word “keep.” Other translations omit this word, but I think it holds a very special meaning. Without it, one could read this passage and think they only need to ask for something from God once and they’ll receive it. However, that’s not the case. With the addition of the word “keep,” it emphasizes that asking, seeking, and knocking is a continuous process.
Have you ever asked God for something once and felt rejected when He didn’t answer? I know I have. In those moments, it feels like God is abandoning you. It’s then that we have to remember that prayer is not a way to receive things, but a way to commune with the Father. When we pray, we are seeking His help, His protection, His love, and ultimately His relationship.
So, we have to “keep” at it. We have to keep praying, keep asking, keep seeking Him – despite the outcome. Our desire and hunger to connect with Him should outweigh the hope of receiving things from Him. Ultimately, a hunger for relation with Him should pull us back to prayer, time and time again.
Spend a dedicated amount of time in prayer. Feel free to use these prompts if you need help getting started.
Ask God for the needs and desires of your heart.
Speak to Him about all that is happening in your life.
I pray the remainder of your week is blessed and you feel communion with Christ.
