Repentance

We are purposed to set aside Sundays at the Tree Church Daily as a special time to engage our hearts and minds in worship, prayer and fellowship. It is a day to devote to God, and for seeking His will for our lives. This involves praying and asking the Holy Spirit to speak His truth to us. As you start your day, let’s pray…

Heavenly Father, there is so much about You that remains a mystery to me. I don’t always understand why things happen in my life, but I do know that You are always here for me. Lord, I have faith in You, and I lean on You when life gets tough. Help me to always trust that You have my best interests at heart. Teach me the difference between regret and true repentance, as I try to live according to Your will. Amen.

Over the last several weeks, our focus has been on the importance of prayer. As we continue in the series, Following Jesus, this week we are looking at repentance. Merriam-Webster defines the word repent as:

  • To feel regret or contrition (true, but not the whole story)
  • To turn from sin and dedicate oneself to the amendment of one’s life (this is much closer to the Biblical truth)

The Biblical definition involves changing your way of thinking and feeling so that you turn away from sin and towards good. Our God is so loving, forgiving and full of grace. When we repent, His heart sings with the sound of our repentance!

As we prepare this week to learn more, take a few moments to consider the following questions. Write your thoughts in a journal, record them on a voice recorder, or just spend some quiet time reflecting on what comes to mind.

Do you think a person who regrets an action but does not repent, might be inclined to repeat that action sometime in the future?

When you pray, do you share with God your acts of repentance?

Today, as you pray, thank God for His mercy on your life and the grace He continually offers you. Don’t rush your time with God; take as much time as you need.

God, help me to have a closer walk with You. Help me to repent from…

Holy Spirit, show me areas in my life where I need repentance…

At church, and throughout your day, reach out to God and ask Him to help you with areas in your life in need of repentance. If you come to Him with a sincere heart, He will meet you there.
