How to Trust God When He’s Silent
Following Jesus Requires More Than Obedience
Following Jesus is often portrayed as a path of peace and assurance, but scripture and life both teach us something different. Obedience to Christ does not guarantee a pain-free life. In fact, it often leads us into spaces of discomfort, challenge, and even silence from God. The real journey of faith is about trusting when it feels hardest to believe. As taught through the ministry of The Tree Church, faith isn’t a path of ease, but one of surrender.
Faithfulness Does Not Eliminate Struggle
Too many of us begin our walk with Jesus believing that faithfulness should remove struggle. But many seasoned believers can attest that this isn’t the case. Choosing to follow Jesus daily often involves hardship even when we are doing everything right. That is not a reflection of failure. It is an invitation to deeper dependence on God.
Endurance Is Formed Through Trials
Faith is strengthened not in ease, but in pressure. Just like an athlete training for an ultramarathon expects the moment of exhaustion, the pain cave, believers should expect seasons when obedience feels incredibly hard. James 1:2–4 encourages us to count trials as joy, knowing they lead to endurance and spiritual maturity. In that tension, God is shaping something eternal in us.
The Canaanite Woman Demonstrates Persistent Faith
In Matthew 15, a Canaanite woman came to Jesus begging for her daughter’s healing. She faced multiple obstacles: she was a Gentile, considered outside the bounds of God's chosen people, and a woman in a patriarchal culture. Jesus' initial silence was jarring. Then came a response that seemed dismissive. Yet she did not give up. Her persistence became a powerful testimony of faith. Jesus commended her not for her background, but for her unwavering belief.
God's Silence Is Not His Absence
We all experience seasons when God seems silent. The Psalms are filled with cries of "How long, O Lord?" These are not signs of weak faith, but of honest relationship. Even when God feels distant, His past faithfulness gives us reason to hope. Silence is not absence. It is often a sacred space where trust is tested and deepened. This concept is explored in depth by Desiring God, showing how silence may invite us to pursue God more deeply.
God's Strength Can Be Found in the Struggle
Sometimes we ask for healing, relief, or clarity, and God allows the struggle to remain. There are areas in our lives, such as anxiety, grief, or disappointment, that don’t vanish overnight. But God uses them. He reshapes our vision of success. Instead of relief, He may give us strength. Instead of answers, He offers presence. This is where faith grows deep.
True Faith Seeks Transformation, Not Comfort
The goal of our faith is not personal comfort or perfect circumstances. It is becoming like Jesus. It is learning to trust when things are unclear and to believe when the path is steep. The struggles we face are not interruptions to our faith, they are part of the very process that strengthens it. As Key Life Ministries explains, these dark seasons can shape us into people of greater trust.
Hold On to God When He Feels Silent
If you find yourself in a season where God feels silent, take heart. Trust is still possible. Like the Canaanite woman, keep bringing your need to Jesus. He sees, He knows, and He is working even when we cannot see it. Let your struggle become the soil where your faith takes root. For more encouragement, browse the Sermons Blog from The Tree Church.
