Flipping Tables and Genuine Worship
“Jesus is still flipping tables in our minds and hearts because he’s fighting for his glory, his reputation, and our hearts.” – Pastor Matthew
Pastor Matthew opened with the tension at the heart of Jesus’ identity: He is both the Lion of Judah and the Lamb of God. From Genesis, where Jacob spoke of Judah as a lion, to Isaiah’s prophecy of the suffering servant, Scripture pointed to a Messiah who would embody both power and sacrifice. John the Baptist declared Jesus the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world, and in Revelation 5 John saw Him as the conquering Lion and the slain Lamb.
This dual imagery feels contradictory to us. We want the Lion’s strength, but Jesus often reveals Himself as the Lamb who suffers. That tension was present when He entered Jerusalem in Matthew 21.

Israel Wanted the Lion
When Jesus rode into the city on a donkey, He fulfilled Zechariah’s prophecy of a humble king. The people cheered “Hosanna” and laid cloaks and branches before Him, believing their Messiah had come. But their expectation was for a warrior king who would overthrow Rome and restore their power.
They wanted freedom from Rome. Jesus came to bring freedom from sin. Their hope was outward and physical. His mission was inward and eternal.

God’s Way Is Always Better
Pastor Matthew reflected on how often we mirror Israel’s expectations. We ask God for comfort, for prosperity, for relief from what feels hard. But God, in His love, often says no to what we want so He can give us what we truly need.
Pastor Matthew shared personal stories of moving from Detroit to Lancaster and of The Tree Church being called to new, challenging ministry opportunities. God’s way was harder, but it brought greater blessing than comfort ever could.

Jesus Flips the Tables
Instead of overthrowing Rome, Jesus went to the temple and began overturning the tables of money changers. The outer court, meant for Gentiles to pray and encounter God, had been turned into a marketplace filled with corruption. Jesus declared, “My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it a den of robbers.”
This act wasn’t aimed at outsiders. It was directed at religious hypocrisy. Jesus wasn’t attacking sinners in the streets, He was cleansing the place meant for worship.

We Are Now the Temple
Today, God’s presence no longer dwells in a man-made temple. When Jesus died, the veil tore, and fifty days later, at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit filled every believer. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 3 and 6 that our bodies are now the temple of God’s Spirit.
That means Jesus is still flipping tables. He fights for His Father’s glory, His reputation, and our hearts. He confronts what keeps us from genuine worship so that we can reflect Him to the world.

Ten Questions for Genuine Worship
Pastor Matthew closed with ten questions for reflection, encouraging listeners to wrestle with them individually, in groups, and in families:
- What tables might Jesus flip in your heart today?
- Do you want Jesus more as Lion or Lamb?
- Are you asking Him to destroy your enemies rather than transform your heart?
- How have you made worship about convenience instead of sacrifice?
- Where have you placed your hope, in outward change or inward renewal?
- How are you resisting His correction because it feels uncomfortable?
- How can you make more space for prayer and worship this week?
- What needs to change so others see genuine worship in your life?
Closing Prayer
Pastor Matthew ended by praying that Jesus would continue to flip the tables in our hearts. not to shame us, but to free us. Every act of Jesus, whether gentle or bold, flows from His love. His desire is that we glorify God, witness to the world, and experience the abundant life only He can give.
