“God is Sovereign, but He will never force Himself on anyone. It is our choice to seek Him.”
Psalm 105:3-4 (ESV)
Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!
Reflection
We are called to give God glory and honor in everything we do. But honestly, this can be difficult at times because God can feel distant if we are not seeking Him like we should. I know this is sometimes true for myself. I get caught up in my own thoughts and the busyness of life and simply forget to give God His glory.
The above scripture tells us to seek God. But what does that mean? I can look around for something I have lost and not put much effort into it. If it is a material thing, I may not even take the time to find it because it can be just as easily replaced. To seek for something goes deeper. It takes action. It takes time for my heart and mind to align with God.
In fact, we have a Father in heaven who is not distant and is waiting for us to talk with Him! It is our decision to allow Him into our life. God is Sovereign, but He will never force Himself on anyone. It is our choice to seek Him, but it takes time for us to build that relationship and it will require us to release control to Him.
What benefits are there to allow God into our lives? Why would we want to seek God?
God is omniscient, meaning He knows everything. Wouldn’t you want to communicate with a loving Father that knows your future?
Our scripture tells us to “seek the Lord and his strength” (verse 4). God is strong, as in He spoke everything into existence strong! He is omnipotent, having unlimited power. Seeking Him can help us in difficult situations. God has seen it all and the Bible is full of stories of God intervening for someone that has prayed for His help.
Verse 5 wants us to “seek his presence continually.” God is omnipresent. His Spirit is everywhere, including within all believers. We are never alone in our struggles, but we need to seek Him constantly, inviting Him into everything we do.
“Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice” (verse 3). Lastly, have joy knowing that God is a good Father. He is kind and loving. He gives His mercy and grace to those who ask. I know it sounds unbelievable, but we are never too distant, our lives never too messed-up, for God to restore. God promises He is faithful if we seek Him daily.
Action step
Does God feel distant to you? Even if He doesn’t, take some time right now to seek Him. Put on worship music and ask God to show you how much He loves you and that He is in the middle of every situation with you. Then give Him praise for everything that He has done for you!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You are so good to us. I thank You that You’re not a distant, unattainable being that I can never approach. In fact, Jesus’ sacrifice has made it possible to approach Your throne room! I thank You for never giving up on me and always pursuing me even when I don’t seek you. Show me when to slow down and sit in Your presence. Amen.
