From God’s Hand
Deuteronomy 8:17-18 (NKJV)
Then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’ “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.”
Reflection
This chapter in Deuteronomy is a reminder to the Israelites to acknowledge God’s goodness by keeping His commandments. Specifically, they were told to give God the first fruits of their earnings in remembrance of His provision (Deuteronomy 26). God knows wealth can lead to a prideful heart, so He wrote His laws accordingly.
The book of Daniel, chapter 4, tells the story of King Nebuchadnezzar, whose wealth he attributed to his own power (verse 30). God’s judgment fell on him before he could even finish his arrogant thought. He spent seven years living as a beast in the field. Eventually, he came to his senses and acknowledged that God rules over everything, and that those who walk in pride He is able to put down (verse 37).
In the same way that we teach our children financial accountability, God requires us to honor Him with our resources. He wants to bless us for our obedience. Many of us trust God with the destiny of our souls, but not with the money in our pockets. However, once we make the connection between obedience and blessings, our outlook on stewardship and generosity will change radically and permanently. Have you experienced that change?
Action Steps
Take time today to get alone with God and ask Him if He is honored by how you steward His resources. Does anything need to change in your attitude and actions regarding money?
Prayer
Lord God, thank You for Your hand of provision in my life. Continue teaching me to give generously and to be satisfied with the good things of Your house. Amen!
