Are You Selfish?
Philippians 2:3-6 (NASB)
Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, as He already existed in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped…
Reflection
Paul implores us to embrace humility while contrasting it with selfishness. He underscores the importance of caring for the community within the church, and in doing so, urges us to follow the ultimate model of selflessness – Jesus Christ.
Selfishness is something that comes naturally to everyone. We are born with an instinct to protect ourselves and move our way up life’s hierarchy. On the contrary, humility is something that we learn. We need to see an example of true humility because we don’t understand it otherwise. Our humility will then help to elevate those around us. When we regard others as more important than ourselves, we create an atmosphere of care, empathy, and selflessness that defines the true Christian community.
Paul urges us to follow the remarkable example of Jesus, who was in the very form of God. Yet Jesus did not cling to His divine status; instead, He emptied Himself, taking on the form of a servant. He willingly surrendered His divine privileges to serve humanity. His ultimate act of humility was seen on the cross, where He selflessly gave His life for our redemption.
In Christ, we find the perfect embodiment of humility and selflessness. He not only considered our interests, but gave His life to secure our eternal well-being. This unparalleled act of love and sacrifice should inspire us to care for one another within the church. Just as Christ humbly embraced the cross, we must embrace the needs of our fellow believers, demonstrating genuine love and care.
As we live out this passage, we must examine our hearts daily, seeking to replace selfish desires with a purpose to serve those around us. Let us look beyond our interests and prioritize the welfare of the church. Just as Christ's humility led to our salvation, our humility can foster a loving, caring, and unified body of believers. In doing so, we honor Christ's command to love others as we love ourselves, and show the world the transformative power of His selfless love.
Action Steps
Prayer
Lord, I humbly come before You, seeking the strength to emulate Christ's selfless love. Teach me to put others before myself, cultivating a heart of humility and care for my community. Help me to follow Your example of willingly sacrificing Yourself for us. Let this devotion be more than words; may it manifest in my daily actions. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Action Steps
- Identify specific opportunities to show humility and care within your community, whether it's your family, workplace, or church. This might involve helping a colleague with a project, listening empathetically to a friend in need, or volunteering your time for a church event. By consciously seeking opportunities to put others first, you'll begin to develop a habit of selflessness.
- Intentionally develop a servant's heart by looking for ways to serve others without expecting anything in return. Over time, this practice will foster a genuine attitude of humility and care for those around you.
