The Living Word
This week, we are pressing into the truth that has been revealed through Jesus. We are inundated with imposter truths every day from other influences we allow in our lives. I know for me, this often obscures the truth, and we need the Holy Spirit to help us discern between the two.
Holy Spirit, I am so sorry for the voices that have influence in my life outside of Yours. Give me discernment and wisdom to limit the lies of this world and listen only to You. Open my eyes and ears to the truth You want me to hold in my heart today.
John 1:1;14 (NLT)
1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
14 So the Word became human and made His home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen His glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
What is truth? It’s one of the great questions of the ages, and has eluded many people for centuries and kept philosophers’ minds spinning. I’ve never had much use for philosophy; it’s not the way my brain works. But I ended up studying a great deal of political philosophy in college. We would debate the classics and write very long papers about existential questions like what is truth? or what is justice? Paul’s caution in Colossians 2:8 would ring loudly in my ears, “Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that came from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.”
We can be confident from today’s scripture that we have direct access to truth in the person of Jesus Christ. John 1:1 tells us, “In the beginning the Word already existed.” Truth predates human existence, so we can be confident that it did not come from human thinking. It was not created, so we know it is not from the spiritual powers of this world. Truth was revealed to mankind when Jesus became a human and “made His home among us (verse 14).” What does the eternal nature of the Word mean to you?
One of the many heartbreaking moments of Jesus’ crucifixion is when Pilate asks Jesus during His trial, “What is truth?” My heart aches that Pilate looked truth directly in the face and missed it. How often do you and I do the same thing?
God sent His Word to live and breathe in the person of Jesus. His life, death, and resurrection are the answer to every question we have about truth.

In a world saturated with high-sounding nonsense, we as disciples of Jesus need to allow His life and example to inform what is true. We can’t do this in our own power, but we can by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Ask God to help you examine everything you see and hear today through the truth filter of Jesus.
May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him.
