The Living Word
This week, we continue to focus on the sword of the Spirit, the word of God. Specifically in today’s devotional, we will explore our relationship with the sword of the Spirit and how we use it to fight our battles. Before we dive in, let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, thank You for pursuing and loving me. I am not worthy of Your generous love, yet You continue to pour Your presence into my life through the living word. Holy Spirit, I invite You into this time as I reflect. Help me to quiet my mind and to fix my eyes on You. Show me Your truths, God, and help me to see and use Your truths as a weapon to fight. In Your loving name, amen.
Hebrews 4:12-13 (NLT)
12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.”
A book, written over 1,500 years ago, is given to us as a piece of armor to fight spiritual battles. You may ask yourself, “How can a book help me fight spiritual battles?”
A few months ago, I was spending quiet time with the Lord. He impressed on my heart to sit still and write down lies I intentionally and unintentionally believed. “I’m a bad mom”, “I’m a terrible wife”, “I’m not a present friend”, “I’m not doing enough”.
Have you found yourself believing any of these lies? Take a moment to reflect, and identify the lies involved in your spiritual battle.
As I started listing lies in my journal, I immediately put on the sword of the Spirit. I prayed, inviting the Holy Spirit into my heart. Why? We cannot fight on our own. We need the power of God, the God who knows our innermost thoughts and desires (v.12). I opened my Bible, and here is what happened.
God, in His gracious love, gave me scripture to fight each lie I was battling. Each scripture cut through the lies and saturated my heart, reminding me of God’s truths.
This is the power of the living word, friends.
When you recognize a lie or lies have snuck into your heart and mind, what actions do you take? Sometimes, we can’t fully remove the lie, however we can fight against the lie by reminding ourselves of God’s truths. We may need to do this multiple times throughout the day.
The word of God is alive and powerful and sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword (v.12). It’s not an outdated book, but rather a divine tool helping us grow closer in relationship with Christ.
Friends let’s pick up our sharpest battle tool. Grab a Bible and find scripture to help you fight your battle.
Here are some prayer prompts to help you get started as you dive into the living word.
Holy Spirit, reveal to me Your truths as I fight…
God, bring into remembrance scripture as I fight my battle…
God, I need You. Guide me. Show me how I can better fight with the sword of the Spirit.
I pray you take comfort knowing the living word is for you.

God's Word is so powerful! We can speak it into and over our lives and see the truth of what God commands us to believe and the strength it has to overcome darkness. Jesus said that we are a light to this dark world. May we be a witness to all we meet by letting His truth shine!
